Beverage Company Sponsors Teen Games

As part of its efforts to contribute to the community, Fire Mountain Beverage Co. recently sponsored this year’s Watts Summer games in Los Angeles, the largest high school athletic competition in the United States.

“Our goal is to support top high school athletes by giving back to the same markets that support our sales,” said Fire Mountain Beverage CEO Anthony Miller. “This event contributes to one of our goals of promoting healthy living through education.”

Since the passage of the Student Nutrition, Health and Achievement Act in 2001, California schools have banned the sale of sugar-sweetened carbonated beverages and are turning to fruit juices, certain sports drinks, diet sodas and bottled water. More recently, major beverage retailers have followed suit, agreeing to stop selling sugar-sweetened beverages to public schools across the country.

Fire Mountain’s Penta Oxygen bottled water is high in vitamins A and C, niacin, potassium and calcium, making it a more nutritious alternative to beverages containing sugar, caffeine, sodium and carbohydrates. Penta is also available in fruity flavors that appeal to consumers of all ages. By sponsoring the Olympics, the company hopes to show young athletes that they have healthier ways to quench their thirst.

The Watts Summer games in Los Angeles began in 1968, three years after race riots tore the Watts community apart. The purpose is to promote understanding and camaraderie among high school students in the area. These games now include football, track and field, volleyball, tennis, cheerleading, music, art and poetry for boys and girls. So far, nearly 200,000 young people have participated in the competition.

To encourage high school students to excel in fields other than athletics, schools were added to the Athletic Conference’s mission. In 1992, a scholarship program was established for youth committed to serving their communities through volunteer work.
